Swell Analysis by Ben Macartney
Queensland and northern NSW enjoyed a run of east swell through early February thanks to a deep low pressure system that started as a tropical depression over the far eastern Coral Sea last week. The low tracked west south-westward late last week, undergoing extratropical transition as it moved into our prime E swell window during Thursday and Friday, aiming a strong to gale force E fetch at the entire East Coast.
The low maintained a slower south-westward track across the northern Tasman on Saturday before gradually weakening and stalling over the region on Sunday. By Monday morning it was located about 540 nautical miles off the NSW coast, maintaining a low end gale force easterly fetch across its southern flank and pushing in the solid swell you see in the video.
